Portugal is renowned for its stunning golf courses, and Braga serves as an excellent starting point to explore the northern region’s golfing gems. This is the first installment of our series, “Golfing in Portugal,” where we highlight courses that capture the beauty and challenge of the sport. Starting with the closest courses to Braga, we offer a snapshot of what makes each destination special.

Golf has always held a special place in my heart. I played a bit during college, but after moving to New York City, I had fewer opportunities to hone my game. Life got busy, and I didn’t pick up a club for nearly 20 years. That changed when I joined some seasoned player friends for a trip to Top Golf—to everyone’s surprise, I smoked them all by about 30 points. Rediscovering my passion for driving, I decided it was time to give the links another go. While I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things, I’ve realized that my tolerance for a full 18 holes isn’t quite what it used to be. That’s why I’m particularly excited about exploring the 9-hole options near Braga.

Clube Golfe Braga

Nestled in Palmeira, Clube Golfe Braga is a local favorite for golfers honing their short game. This 9-hole, par-27 course spans approximately 600 meters and is designed for pitch-and-putt play. It features a driving range and the “CGB Academy,” which offers lessons for beginners and seasoned players alike. One visitor shared, “The course is perfect to train short play. Leave your driver at home.” (Source: GolfPass) Whether you’re new to golf or a seasoned enthusiast, this course offers a relaxed yet engaging experience right in Braga.

Golf Quinta da Barca

Located in Esposende, about 17 miles from Braga, Golf Quinta da Barca combines natural beauty with a thoughtful course layout. This 9-hole, par-31 course stretches over 1,957 meters and challenges players with its undulating greens, strategic bunkers, and serene lakes. One golfer remarked, “Lovely little course, ideal for a quick round with friends.” (Source: 1Golf.eu) Quinta da Barca offers a peaceful yet stimulating environment, making it a must-visit for those venturing slightly outside Braga.

Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima

Just 16 miles from Braga, Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima provides a more extensive golfing experience with its 18-hole championship course. Set against the backdrop of lush landscapes, this course is both challenging and picturesque. A recent visitor praised it, saying, “This is a great golf course with stunning views and a layout that tests every part of your game.” (Source: 1Golf.eu) Its combination of natural beauty and sporting challenge makes it a standout destination in northern Portugal.
